Ashmore Estates has long been known as a haunted building. The building has for the last 20 years been off-limits to the general public. Many have visited the site illegally and experienced the haunt first hand. Now you can experience this 'massively haunted' site for your self. The new owners have made the site available in many ways.
Historical Information: Ashmore Estates is a three floor building that was built in 1916. It has housed people who were indigent and those who had mental disabilities. From 1916 to around 1956 the building was the Coles County Almshouse located on the 2-300 acre Coles County Poor Farm. During that period as many as 70 people died in the building, mostly from natural causes. From 1956 to 1976 it housed the "mentally impared" as a mental institution. In 1976 Paul Swinford purchased the building and reworked it to be used as a ICFDD (Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled). The building remained in use until 1987 when it was closed due to lack of funding. The building has spent 20 years decaying and hosting various spirits. There has been 13 paranormal groups here since July 2006 and all have said the building in very active.
He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.
When we are afraid we ought not to occupy ourselves with endeavoring to prove that there is no danger, but in strengthening ourselves to go on in spite of the danger. ~Mark Rutherford
