Blog Entry: Greetings! We hope you like the new look of our newsletter. This is an exciting month, for there are some exciting developments in the paranormal world of ghosts and angels that are worth discussing. Recently, I was contemplating the birth of ghost pictures. When did photographs of ghosts begin? Ghost photographs first appeared in the mid-1800's, with many attributing the first ghost photos to William Mumler . Mumler was a Boston engraver who practiced photography as a hobby. After a deceased relative appeared behind him in a photograph in 1862, Mumler began a business producing spirit photographs . His timing was perfect it seems, as many lost loved ones in the Civil War and were eager to have proof of their spiritual existence. A movement called Spiritualism (the belief that spirits of the deceased live and interact with the living) was fast becoming popular, as well. The Strange Case of William Mumler, Spirit Photographer by Louis Kaplan is a fascinating book that presents all sides of Mumler's story. You see, many tried to debunk Mumler's spirit photography techniques, but to no avail. Even the fraud trial brought against him with help from circus owner, PT Barnum could not disprove the work of William Mumler, though the bad publicity did discredit him in the public eye. Author Kaplan shares his finds surrounding the father of the modern-day ghost photo, allowing readers to decide for themselves as to the odd case that is William Mumler. I highly recommend this book to all ghost photo enthusiasts! This month, I decided to also take a closer look at orbs in photographs. Orbs, balls of light, have captivated many, especially since the digital camera made its way into our homes. We have received countless numbers of orb photos over the years, so I felt it necessary to finally get a chance to dive a little bit deeper into what is causing many of these anomalies in pictures. In short, most orbs are not caused by spirit energy, but are created primarily through flash reflection, dust, and moisture. Still, many do not believe this to be true. So to help those who wish to investigate the paranormal, we have put together a collection of orbs created through a variety of means, and focused primarily on eliminating dust orbs, the most common cause of the little light spots in many photographs. To understand dust orbs, be sure and read the following articles: Dust Orbs Dust Orbs Video Get Rid Of Dust Orbs Dust orbs can be reduced by either using a camera less prone to illuminating particles near the lens, or by procuring a lens hood or creating a dust shield. Another interesting tidbit of news came from SciFi's Ghost Hunters Live event that took place Halloween night 2008. The TV show aired one of the ghost hunters having their coat collar grabbed three times, supposedly by a ghost. Be sure and review three videos we posted in this month's ghost videos section, as the video creators took time to break down the SciFi footage. Suffice to say, many have been left upset with the program. By the way, if you want to see a new ghost investigation TV program, be sure and watch The Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures . It airs every Friday night. Finally, I would like to bring your attention to something that is happening within the Hispanic religious community: angel apparition videos and images. We found several videos on-line of outdoor worship services, centered around bonfires. Videos of these events reveal what appears to be images flying in and around the flames. Some believe them to be angels...or apparitions of spirit. Quite interesting displays, so be sure and see the Angel Apariciones posted this month on Angels & Ghosts.
