A recent conversation I had with a psychologist had me mulling something over that I had not ever really considered, until now. The psychologist, a woman who is also interested in the paranormal and the metaphysical, asked me a question that I couldn't answer. What happens to the mind and spirit of a living being during an episode of mental disorder? That is, a person who "takes temporary leave of their mind" for lack of a better term, during a mental collapse--even a temporary one. Such as during a dark phase of a Bi-polar disorder, an episode of dissociative behavior/disorder, or during post-traumatic stress disorder, for example.
What brought the subject up, was the fact that the psychologist had been working with a client who was seeking help for multiple personality disorder and, during sessions, would sometimes leave her consciousness and allow one of her other personalities to take over (think of that movie, Sybil--that's how it was explained to me). The client would return to her conscious mind shortly after, but would begin to show signs of out of body experiences and/or temporary psychic ability when coming out of her "episode." She would tell the psychologist about an incident that happened in the office to a previous client the day before, even though the two clients had never met. She would mention a note that the psychologist had written while one of the other personalities was taking over (though the psychologist was at the other end of the room and the client could not have been able to read the psychologist's notes from so far a distance).
Is it possible that those with mental disorders are able to more easily astral project or experience OOBEs? My theory is, and I really don't know what it is based on, I'm taking a stab in the dark, but here goes: I think that with depression, bipolar, multiple personalities, etc., the person sometimes feels that they are not in complete control of their rational thoughts, even if on a temporary or short-term basis. The subconscious mind and/or spirit may take over and would "elevate" itself to a higher level. The mind and/or spirit leave the body (where it is not in control) to a state where it is in control by watching over itself from above (the body) through astral projection or OOBE. It would be interesting to find some case studies on this, if any exist. I do have a close friend who is bi-polar and she can astral project at will during a dream state, like no other person I've ever met. Could be coincidence... could be a link. Thoughts?
