What makes a place haunted?

Why are some places haunted and other places, that by all history should be, are not?

In my hometown of Vincennes Indiana, there is a central park that has been the scene of several suicides, an abduction, a tragic accident involving a 3 year old girl, and who knows what else (I'm just relaying what I know first hand from living there)  I have never heard a peep about the park being haunted.

Down by the river near the Illinois/Indiana border and by the university is another park that should be haunted.  A partially embalmed body of a known gay boy ( who was a classmate of mine in the 80s) was discovered. An investigation never went anywhere.  You'd think that would be a motivated spirit!  There's also been at least three suicides and two murders at this park that I know of.  Again, I haven't heard anything about a haunting.

Both of these places have the histories.  One is near water and both are built on limestone.  What do you think?  I think the next time I am home (Memorial Day weekend) I am going to take my kit and go investigating.  If you are near Vincennes, you are more than welcome to join me.

My cousin is the Sheriff.  I wonder if I have to get permission to be in a public park after dark?  I think I do.  He thinks I'm crazy already!  Seriously, is anyone in the Southwestern Indiana/Southereastern Illinois area intersted in joining?

I would be there with you in a heartbeat.  Maybe it depends on the public who perceives the area.  Like you said, they are parks, if it's a favorite public park, people wouldn't necessarily think it's haunted for fear of then not going to that park.  Denial is a strong thing.

However, for people like us.................. we welcome the odd and amazing history of places.  Let us know if you get anything, sounds interesting.

P.S.  To answer your question, I have been told I have a face that could haunt a house.

I was going to suggest that you do that very thing - investigate for yourself!  Just be careful of any crazies - sounds like maybe a dangerous area!  Take Care, Joy

Perhaps there is no record of hauntings because no one has ever investigated thoroughly.  I would definately be working that area if it was close to me.  Nitewing

Really good question. Then it brings to mind for me, how many places are haunted by spirits that have died in the last 50 years or sooner? I don't know of any. Then there is a theory that those departed stay in a limbo for many years before moving on or staying behind.

This would be a good venture for Ghost Hunters. Seek out places of the recently deceased and look for activity.
