A Short History of Ashmore Estates!

A Digital Book in Portable Document Format (.pdf)

Ashmore Estates is of growing interest to the Illinois community and will appear (along with the author of this book) in several upcoming documentaries, in including "Children of the Grave 2" by the Booth Brothers.

For nearly twenty years, Ashmore Estates has loomed large in the minds of Coles County residents as well as students at Eastern Illinois University.  It has stood abandoned since 1987, every subsequent year falling prey to vandalism and neglect...

Ashmore Estates, as it has been known for the past forty-eight years, was once the Coles County Poor Farm, a place for indigent and elderly members of the community to live and work in relative stability.

That all changed in 1959, when the building, known as an almshouse, was sold to Ashmore Estates, Inc. and turned into a psychiatric hospital.  It has had many uses since then, but that is how generations of Coles County residents remember it.  “The abandoned insane asylum.”  What is its real story?
