Sacred Gifts and Sacredness

Lately I've been blessed to receive inspiration on the use of some terminology that has troubled me over the years. Today the term that I feel inspired on is "sacred gifts."

A lot of people refer to their "gifts" when they speak of intuition, psychic ability, spiritual healing, sensitivity to spiritual beings, communication with angels and spirits, connectedness with animal and plants, and other "special" abilities.

I never liked using the term "gifts." It's not that I don't consider them gifts or am not grateful for them. It's just that the term gets bantied around so much that then people become referred to as being "gifted" which may suggest that they are better than someone else or in some way a step above them. The truth is that every human being has gifts, and no ones gifts are any better or worse, any higher or lower on any scale than anyone elses. So, I just feel a little uncomfortable with the term "gifts" because it may (but not necessarily should or does) imply something more.

The term "spiritual gifts" is closer to a truer meaning; but also is misused at times to suggest an elitist mentality. One who boasts of being spiritually gifted is, by default, suggesting that others are less gifted. One should never boast, of course, and certainly not to set oneself up as being elite.

I'm sure that others have found terms for what they do that fit their individualy circumstances. The term that feels right for me is "sacred gifts." This serves as a reminder that these spiritual things are sacred and that it is the sacredness of life that is most important. Placing the word "sacred" before the word "gift" suggests that accepting the gift does not make one gifted. It fills one with humility and a desire to honor the sacredness of that which has been bestowed on him or her.

This leads me to the thought of the sacredness of life. When we come to a closer acceptance and honor of the sacredness of life, we bring the sacred into all that we do.

When we think of sacredness, our first thought may be of sacred places. We may consider a church or burial ground to be a sacred place. We may think of famous landmarks that are considered sacred places. We may rightfully regard our homes as sacred when we treat them with respect and honor.

But there is sacredness in life itself. To be sacred is to be declared holy, worthy of respect, dedicated or devoted to a purpose, consecrated. We may not always think of life in this way; but it appropriate and honorable to do so.

When we consider life sacred, we cannot hate another for within them is sacredness. When we consider life sacred, we treat others with respect. We cannot exhibit cruelty for animals. We give honest sincere appreciation for the food we eat, being thankful for the plants whose sacred purpose was to provide our food. Consider today the sacredness of life in moments of clarity as you go about your day. It is an inspiring experience.

There are still issues with the inboxes. I'll get on it tomorrow and see if I can't figure out what the problem is. I apologize for any unusual things that may occur during this time. Maybe we really are haunted!?
