Provocation is so provoking

I’ve watched Ghost Hunters on SciFi and now Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel and have noticed that both teams use provocation as a means to increase spirit activity.  Why do they do that?  If as they say, they are there to document paranormal activity, why would they want to do something that would alter the activity?  If they walk into a room and instantly start shouting and cussing at the spirit they certainly won’t get the same response that the homeowner gets when they just sit down and turn on the TV.  So what is the purpose?  My thought is that it’s just to make a more exciting episode and if that’s the case, then they are doing the paranormal community a disservice.

Ghost hunting as a hobby has exploded since the first airing of SciFi’s Ghost Hunters and, unfortunately, there are inexperienced teams that want to emulate Jason & Grant and think that since they saw it on TV it is standard protocol.

I started ghost hunting 5 years ago and have never thought that provoking would be a means to document or understand phenomena.  I’ve investigated some cases where the spirit made me angry enough to want to cuss it out, but again, to what end.  It certainly wouldn’t alleviate the problem that the client is experiencing.  I always go into an investigation with the thought that I get to go home to my comfortable, spirit free home at the end of the night but the client has to stay and put up with any mess I may make in my ignorance.

If others have a valid reason for provoking spirits, I’d like to hear it.  It is possible that my view is too narrow and I’m always open to other positions.  So let me know what you think.  Does provoking help or hinder investigations?

Ghost Hunter's- I have watched dozens of episodes of this series.  Jason and Grant have really capitalized on the misery of some people, and really have made a lot of money beyond there Roto-Rooter salaries.  What really disturbs me is all of the little paranormal investigation groups which have popped up in response to them and follow there sick doctrine of investigation.  Now every little high school kid with a camera and a tape recorder thinks they are a paranormal investigator.  What makes me most angry about there investigations is when they arrive at a home.  "Hi were from TAPS were here to help."  Then they kick the family out of there house and set up thousands of dollars in unnecessary equipment only to get, nothing.  But tell me, do they ever come out and say "yeah, this house is haunted"?  No, they don't.  And the reason is because they don't know how to conduct a real investigation.  They also try to "provoke" spirits by talking New Jersey trash to them.  If they ever did that in a real infested house, they would probably get tossed out of a window.  They never actually help anyone, they come up with all kinds of cockamamie  reasons for the phenomenon.  Some day Grant and Jason will wake up and it will be raining rocks in there living room.

Then Jason is a damn liar LOL.

On one of the very first episodes Jason and Grant were asked why they became investigators.  Grant said he was slapped by an entity.  In a later episode Grant was pushed down.  Also, one of their cameramen was knocked over while filming at a military base and had heat marks on his face, and seemed to be in a state of emotional shock.  Jason witnessed two of these events personally.

One of the many inconsistencies with show that I have noted.

I agree with nearly everything said here. Since our group works mainly with private homeowners, I wouldn't want to make the situation worse. Even if there's nothing there, the client could become distressed just witnessing this kind of provocation.

On the other hand, I believe as Ken has said, that there is a time and place for religious provocation when a demonic entity is involved.

I'm guessing they do it because they want a response and it's good TV.

A ghost still has their personality from the life they have not completed, and are confused about their circumstances (most don't know they are dead) Provocation may get a response, but that response may be an attack if the ghost was a violent person. Some want to make contact, but most want to be left alone and are scared and confused.

I know Jason on TAPS likes to say... 'I don't know anyone who has ever been hurt by a ghost.' I wish him well and know many people who have had dangerous interactions... and I have my own experiences from when I was young and stupid (oh, wait, that's redundant isn't it?)

Here's my other concern. I would not treat a living person that way, so I refuse to treat a confused, lost spirit that way. My goal is not confirming phenomena. My goal is helping the ghost complete their life by crossing over to Spirit.

First, I consider provocation impolite.  I treat the spirits as I would like to be treated as a sign of respect.  I have my basic success using my method.  If you were in a room and someone started cussing you, would you tend to ignore them and leave or would you start an argument that you couldn't win?

Second, I think those who provoke on TV are demeaning our work and are idiots.  That's why I don't watch them anymore. ^v^

The last sentence was supposed to say "To provoke "without" some sort of reason is wrong.I needed to make sure this was made clear.

Question? If a spirit in life was mean,Abusive,Angry,Demented and after death, will his/her personality and soul stay that way?If you know in detail,The nature and personality of this spirit and tried to provoke,Knowing this person was not a good person is this ok?I'm speaking of pedophile's,Rapist's and murder's.This appears to be the reason investigators tend to provoke,And yes I have done this too.By nature we tend to treat, as we were treated. Not knowing the history of a spirit I'm searching for I would never provoke.A same scenario occurs when one thinks a spirit is picking on......Touching or harrasing the women of a group,We do have a tendency to protect.Perhaps these are not valid reasons for provoking. We are human and don't always have rational reasons for provoking,To provoke with some sort of reason is wrong.
