As a practitioner of the occult, I would like to add some thought that don’t come up much in these conversations and that’s the philosophy of some occultist such as Levi, who like myself actually gained deep spiritual understanding through the practices. To paraphrase Levi it is one thing to think you believe in God it is another to enter a dialog with him.
Any contrary to popular belief there are many monotheistic occultists. I would include the masons who are monotheistic and the Golden Dawn, which is Christian. For the most part occult practices are initiations in the same way as the Catholic Sacraments, and spells nothing more then prayers. I realize this is an over simplification.
Can reading occult books cause damage just reading them? Well yes, maybe. I will use an experience many years ago. One I am not proud of but it proves the point.
At a time I became so furious at a man that I wished him the greatest harm. I read a curse ritual with the intent of making it happen. Soon after his parents who he was close to both died. When you have access to power and you don’t know what you’re doing, getting caught up in a moment can be disastrous. If I just read the ritual, the way I read a newspaper, nothing would have happened.
Also, when I was younger I read a lot of Levay. The words had a powerful effect on me. Just hearing them in my mind, makes me feel, for lack of a better word, evil. It’s taken me many years to overcome this problem. Maybe reading machiavelli or Niche does the same to other people.
I wouldn’t read occult books unless you are secure in your belief system and have excellent control over your mind.
