The Salutation Inn 02-Feb-2008
Oh man where to start!
Ok well the people that have been to this pub know that they have a licence until 2am.... but it wasn't until we got to the pub that we were informed that there was also a party on the first floor which was to finish at 3am... with a live thrash metal band! annoyed is the word I think!
We got to the pub around 5pm ish so Shawn, David, Me & our medium Spooky Stu decided to go for a wonder around Nottingham centre and find some haunted locations
first stop was the Galleries of Justice & just as we got to the gates they closed... still looks like a fantastic place I really need to do an investigation there. Next stop was a wonder past Nottingham Castle and down to Ye olde Trip to Jerusalem - all I can say is WOW I love that pub! I wish it was my local we need to do an investigation there!
Around half 6 we were joined by Emma and then at 7pm us plus Shawn & Dave went on the Notts ghost walk; which was a good laugh and interesting even if the guide did freak me out slightly
The investigation was exciting prospect for one there was only 5 of us plus Alison; once the party had finished!
We started in the caves around 9pm minus the Medium who was having too much of a good time in the party upstairs. Through the noise of the people upstairs it was possible to do a "sort of Vigil". Once Stu decided to join us me and Emma sat in the middle caves while the boys sat in the bottom caves, with Dave upstairs. We hard a couple of bangs from around the area of the well and when I called out for the same again we all heard 2 more bangs from the same direction to me the second was followed by movement or some thing being thrown which you can hear clearly on my DVD. We send Dave back upstairs to replicate the noises but he couldn’t get the same sound.
Next we moved to the cave at the bottom of the stairs on the right - Stu told us that it was very male orientated and that Emma and me wouldn’t be welcome as it was very Masonic. Emma and me felt fine and nothing happened. We left a tray on a raised area with flour on it to see is we could get any fingerprints etc.
Next we all went back to the main cave. All was quiet so I decided to go to my bag, which I had left in the middle part of the caves. I felt rather uncomfortable and radioed back to the others to tell them; I felt some one next to me believing it to be Stu I turned to talk to him but no one was there!! Queue Angie screaming her head off :dunno the others did move pretty quick to find me though pmsl so I don’t know what happened there; a presence of a tall dark shadow next to me... I have no idea what it was; make of it what you will. Did I just witness my first ghost or shadow person? Maybe my gatekeeper dropped my guard in the first hour again!?
Me, E & S did a vigil and through some pennies against a wall in the main cave only notable thing that happened was that S and me heard one of them move like it was slid across the stone floor.
Not much really happened until kicking out time then.
We managed to get the main pub at about 2:45am. Emma & me went up to the first floor, then down stairs again for some peace and quiet – the medium was drunk and not being quiet at all; we had also been joined by a couple of very enthusiastic party goers. Eventually E, S, D & me went up to the first floor and decided to try a séance. D watched while the 3 of us sat in he middle of the room; my camcorder facing us. We asked for things to happen but all we got was my chair started rocking slightly back and forward and S fell into a deep sort of trance; after about 10mins S started getting distressed and started to cry; Stu had rejoined us and decided to break the circle. Personally I know S has been ill in recent months so I put it down to the stress and then being in a relaxed state.
We were allowed to investigate the caves below the beer cellar (no one has been allowed in there before and the staff refuse to go down there – Alison didn’t want to join us and remained in the cellars) Nothing happened in the Caves but Alison reported loud bangs and shuffling up with her; S joined her and could hear the same – our group abandoned the cellar and some of them went to check out the noises. E & me went back up stairs and tried another séance with D but nothing happened so I decided to get the dowsing rods.
I went down in to the caves ALONE!! And collected the rods – I decided to check the flour tray while down there and I noticed a blob of red – blood like substance on the side for the tray in the flour. I checked for drips or other sources but I couldn’t see find any reason for it. At the top of the stairs I told stu and went back down to take a photo.
Back upstairs E & me did some dowsing I went to the area of the gent’s loos as E heard noises in there while I was downstairs. I contacted a man call Quentin who likes to visit. We moved to the Cromwell Snug; E wanted some dowsing practise. I started and contacted a woman who had been murdered at the Inn; she was a working girl and wanted to move on. E then told me the pub used to be a brothel…. That I did not know!
E took over and got a few answers but couldn’t hold the rods properly so I took over again. This time I tried my best to move her on I thought it had worked but when E took the rods again the woman came back through. She said she wanted to leave but needed Stu to help her. I got Stu and with E, S, Stu & me with Alison and D watching we did a clearing. Stu told the woman to use my energy and asked me her name “Clara” Stu started the séance and almost instantly I felt like all the air was being sucked out of my lungs, my throat dried and I felt like I was choking and I started gasping for air- then I broke down in tears as well. I don’t really remember what happened but I know I was clinging on to the boys hands digging in my nails, I felt like I was going to fall over and everyone’s voices seemed miles away. After wards I felt weak; I don’t know what to make of this experience maybe it was a spirit using my energy or maybe I was just scared. I guess I will never know.
Once the clear appeared we moved back down to the cellar. We checked the flour tray which the blob had now turned browny red and checked for drip sources. Conclusion: We have no idea where it came from and it did look like blood.
The Pub is a great location. I would be nice to go back and do a full night minus the noise from the customers!!
The 3 main things for me were; the shadow I had beside me in the caves, S crying mid séance, the blood and the dowsing and the clearing. I’m not saying they are paranormal – just interesting

Jamaica Inn
Quote:
Built in 1750, Jamaica Inn was a coaching inn - a bit like our modern day service station. Weary travellers using the turnpike between Launceston and Bodmin would stay at the Inn after having crossed the wild and treacherous moor.
Jamaica Inn was remote and isolated so it was an excellent stopping place on the way to Devon and onward. It is also thought that the Inn may have got its name because it did a considerable trade in rum!
In 1778 the Inn was extended to include a coach house, stables and a tack room creating the l-shaped main part of the building as it is today.
For years there have been many stories of hauntings at Jamaica Inn and recently the Ghost Society has made in-depth investigations and compiled a report based on their findings. The areas of substantial interest to the investigation were, The Smuggler's Bar, The Stable Bar, the restaurant and upstairs in bedroom four.
I arrived at the Inn at 10 to 9 in the evening. Other members had been there for a while and been drinking in the bar; they had already been put into groups. I was in group 3 (of 3 with 9 other people!) 3 of whom had come over from Ireland for the night! We started off by all walking to the near by chapel (to kill time while drinkers were still in the bar. I spoke to the members of my group and found one was a "really" experianced know it all having done the "22 haunted pub hunt in 4 hours". On arriving at the chapel and cemetry I realised what kind of a night i was in for..... I was raining..... yes there were lots of "orbs" in the photos.... the one man.... yes ONE man in charge of the eveing and all 3 groups (totalling about 25 people) was telling everyone who found a "orb" in a photo "you have some thing there!" omg then one of the girls in my group took a long exposure picture without keeping the camera still.... yes you got it the photo blured.... que "oooo very intersting I think you have caught some thing there!! omg shut the F**k up!!! I had my photos from Borigdon and Preston Manor still on my memory card so i showed them some similar photos i have managed to take by accident..... nope they werent convince.... i even took one and made it bury for them to prove my point.... NO they were convinced they had some thing. ffs!
Yes this is a sign of things to come!
Talking to the Mother of the 3 from Ireland at least i managed to convince her that Derek is a fake... something acheived for the night at least. I also had a chat to the man in charge on the walk back to the Inn (Rich) he was tellingme about his investigation at Bodmin! He said "you know that cell down in the basement where that woman killed her baby? well i had a strange feeling walking past that cell with my little 6mt old son". I didnt have the heart to break his litle fantasy that he had been in contact with the woman that killed her baby in that cell..... urmm there is a sign on the wall out side of the cell telling the story of a woman who was convicted because she killed her baby; she was later hung at the gaol. She wasnt kept in that cell and she didnt kill the baby at the gaol; infact none of the signs in the gaol are outside of any of the cells where the actual people where held; these records dont exsist! but he was convinced!... a sign of the auto suggestion to come me thinks
Back at the Inn sitting in the restaurant area flicking through my photos the only thing i had managed to get was wet feet!
Before the group could do any investigating Rich let each group off at a time to the museum to do the protection ritual! one by one each person had to hold a bunch of burning sage; waving it around their had reading a passage; to give that person protection.... needless to say i couldnt be bothered with that C**p and after everyone had done the little ritual the vigils started 45mins late!
Vigil 1 - Museum Area
As we were group 3 we where last to be taken to our vigil (rich had to organise the others first!) We were lead in and he turned the lights out.... we were told NO cameras or Torchs for the first 10 or so minutes..... it was pitch black no light source at all... so it was a case of hold the person in front and feel with the other hand for the walls! hummm health and safety eat your heart out! As soon as we were left by Rich i thought it was going to be a repeat of Boringdon Hall with the ywo young Girls in my group..... mobile phones started ringing and they wouldnt shut up! arghhhh i decided to bugger um and go back the way i came to do some stuff on my own! I called out.... nothing at all it was flat.
After 20 mins Rich came back and lead us to another part of the museum; telling us that there is a little girl in that area and she always does something for people. I heard a few faint tapps on and off and one time when i asked form some one to whistle back one of the cabinets in the room creaked the same tune!
Rich returned for the 3rd or 4th time and brought ouijui board No 1 to us! I joined the board with 3 others and the little girl (patsy) came through the glass moved very fast and definate. She said she was sitting one place near the board and one of the irish girls beside me said she saw a shadow in that spot 4 of us picked up our cameras and took some photos of that area we all got orbs... i shall post mine! Which was strange!
Between vigils on a break i decided to go and take some photos outside... thats when i caught an interesting wispy sort of thing on a photo near the front door... which was wierd... i shall post later!
Vigil 2 - Bedrooms 3, 4, 5 & 6
Yep 4 bedrooms to investiagte in 35mins/ hour!!! We started as a whole group in room 4; Jack Trevellis is the resident spook in this room; long green cloak and a tricorn hat; he was apparently a smuggler. The room was comfortable and after trying to call out for a few minutes me and the Irish ladies moved rooms as the other ladies decided they wanted slience!
Room 5 this is the bedroom where in Most Haunted Yvette and Tom saw the face of a women in the mirror and Ian Lawman did a clearing for them. This room was quiet as well. Only thing i can report is that i was freeezing; boiling hot and then freezing again. The two girls decided that they could see a face in a blured photo they took ... which resulted in them screaming and leaving the room!
Room 6 apparently faces are caught in photos in this room; Rich joined us.... v quiet... nothing to report.
Room 3 Rich told a story of how a group ONCE experianced a young girl in visitation in this room .... she was recognised by the smell of burning hair. Auto suggestion implanted...... surprise one of the girls had a tickly nose and could smell smoke.... and bigger surprise... so could Rich i just cracked up laughing and had to leave the room!
Cue ouiji board No 2! I swear the ouiji boards where mating and multiplying like rabbits!
In room 4 me, Rich and the two young girls sat at the board we called out and it glass didnt move.... BUT the floor tapped under my foot a few time like when i was at the LLandoger Trow.... and i have to say.... it shit me up! I wasnt a happy bunny at all!
Cue ouiji board No 3 as the bedroom vigils ended early and we were lead down to the restaurant area!! After being told for the umpteenth time that Jack kept coming through on the board in that area.. in the museum and reception ooo and the bedroom.... surprise Jack came through! and tbh i cant be asses to explain it..... but it was a ouiji board session.... end of!
Vigil 3 - Restaurant/ Pedlers bar and Reception (was generator room)
Vigil 3 kinda merged in with vigil 2 as we were taken to do the ouiji board during our time we should have been in the bedrooms. Actually all vigils tended to merge together as there was NO organisation and people were just wondering around doing every they wanted any way!!! Not that im annoyed or anything!!!!
"lets go to the recepetion" said Rich..... Cue ouiji board No 4 !!!!!
oooh and guess what Jack was there to greet us! um pardon me or do you think there were a few too many ouiji boards? omfg!!!
I had almost left at about 2am when things were just going from rediculous to completly pathetic but i decided to wait it out! At 3am ish i abandoned to group and went outside to take some photos of the exterior while everyone else was indoors doing vigils. i was outside for about 10mins and it was a really calm clear night... I havent a clue where it came from but i heard what sounded like piccalo (sort of a cross between a penny whistle and a flute) playing a tune... it wasnt the cables from the flags or signs as i could hear them seperatly and there was a definate tune which lasted about 30seconds... i checked with some staff later on and they dont know of any reported music.
It was after this point i kind of gave up and decided to do my own thing.... i sat in the side bar; inbetween the main bar and the reception for about 30mins flicking through my photos... i thought i saw a shadow pass me a few times but nothing caught.
Next i went up stairs again and retreated to room 4 sitting in the door way talking to a member of another group across the corridor before he gave up and left me alone. Nothing happened... I think Jack was too busy on the 4 ouiji boards down stairs!
The Irish mum decided to join me but we got bored and wondered down to the museum before she freaked out so we abandoned that idea! Looking for a quiet retreat i sat in the small seating area between the gift shop and the restaurant... i stayed there for about 45mins thinking... "this torture will be over soon and as soon as i hear Rich calling everyone back to the restaurant area i will join them. Time ticked and at 4:20 ( the night was suppose to end at 4am) i decided to wonder back into the other room.... NO one was there.... infact all their stuff had gone as well and it was just little old me and my stuff left!!!
How unprofessional.... the organiser had buggered off and not done a head count to make sure everyone was ok. In the main bar a couple of staff members were chatting so i asked if everyone had gone they said yes although there was a small group left in the reception. I went to lok and it was the other half of group 3 that liked silence... doing a ouiji board!! i thought i would hang around and to cut a long story short... one of the woman was so blantly pushing the glass.... dates where coming out spot on and surprise when she took of her finger... nothing happened and when i asked her not to look answers were very random!
The computer did turn its self on and dial up to the net while we were sitting there but nothing else happened. They gave up and left and i went to talk to the two ladies chatting in the bar.
i managed to get an extra 2hours at the inn after the prganiser bugger off... i have to say i have never seen such a lack of organisation before... for such a famous property and sought after location for investigations they really really need to get their act together... if i had the guts i would have asked for a refund.
My advice .... if you are considering taking part in an investigation at the Jamaica Inn orgaised by the Inn.... DONT DO IT.
If you can get a private investiagtion there i beleive it would be great but not with this group.... its beyond a joke.
A total waste of my time, money and effort.....
I wont be going back
Boringdon Hall, Plymton, Devon
Situated only five miles from Plymouth City Centre, this Grade I listed Elizabethan Manor House has been restored to its former glory and retains an air of tranquility and grace. Room 15, 16 & 17 are all reportedly haunted by appartitions that sit on the end of beds and watch the occupants. The whole building Buzzes with an atmosphere and has many supposed ghosts.
After eventually finding the venue and not eating before hand!!! i got to the location at just gone 6pm... the rest of the investigation group arrive around 8:30pm. So had plenty of time to catch up with Angel and have a quick drink in the bar with her, Vince, Sara and Phil.
The DHN members that had managed to bag tickets for the location (only 6 of us out of 26!) grabbed the table at the back of the confrence room (to set the tone of being rebels and chocolate nickers! ).
We were split into 4 groups; 3 led by Vince, Phil & Sara and another made up of Paul, TracyP and Pauls wife. Me and Angel were in the same group as Ian and 2 girls who were apparently pros and V sensitive having had done this many times before
Vigil 1 - Room 17 - Team leader Sara
Me and Angel took up position on one ofthe twin beds while the other girls took the other bed; Ian sat in the window and Sara had a chair by the door. From the word go the "girls" were rowdy not shutting up and shouting and screaming. There was a few noises down by the bathroom (the room was a suite and had a seperate bedroom along with a small stepped corridor with a bathroom off of it opposite the entrance) so Ian went to investigate and one of the girls went with him in her high heels boots and pulling get up... in short the room wasnt very active.... the looks on Angel's, Sara's and my faces on Angels camera must be classic.... the muttering, cursing and swearing all symaltanious. if any thing had happened in that room we wouldnt have heard any thing as they were so blooming loud, regarless of the warnings from Sara telling them to be quiet and that there was a group in the next room! Closer inspection by me of one of there bottles showed vodka and bloody strong vodka at that..... so what to report of this vigil? noisey bloody girls!!! and 4 very p****d off DHNers.
Vigil 2 - Conference room - Team Leader Vince
During the break between vigils Sara had had a word with Vince and Phil and Vince managed to get the girls out into the out side part of the room so me, Angel and ian could have some peace. The room had a strange feel to it and felt busy. we ahd a few bangs and taps. I suggested we have a sceance sitting on holding hands in the centre of the room. We had a few more bangs and taps and what sounded like some foot steps. Angel felt some one brush her face and a few minutes later ian reported a brush on his arm (angel hadnt said what she felt at the time). The only major occurance we had in the room was that when we were asking questions there were lots of really loud bangs from the doors down stairs in the toilets that correspondid with the; the toilets weremt that busy so me and angel investigated after the vigil and there were only 2 doors below that actually banged loudly the others closed gently and slow. so that was a mystery.
Vigil 3 - Rose Room & Bar - Team Leader Phil
As soon as i walked into the gallery area of the first floor I didnt like it, it felt restrictive; but the roof wasnt as high as the rest of the rooms in the hall so maybe thats what it was. It was kind of split into 3 sections upstairs the main gallery, the access and a seperate small back room. I was drawn to the back room, maybe as it was so dark in there but the two girls followed suit; i tried to sit quietly in the back corner but they were in full swing again... this time trying to chat up Phil! So I went and sat out in the main gallery area with Angel and Ian. It was really quiet; apart from the din of a ringing mobile phone and a giggly girl arguing with her boyfriend. Angel saw a figure on the ground floor walking past the bar door but other then that and Phil wanting to slap some sense into the two girls nothing to report.
Vigil 4 - Room 15 - Team Leader Sara
On the way upto this room we spotted the girls in the bar area with the two barmen that they were chatting up outside; so we legged it and locked ourselves into the the room to escape them! Me and Angel bagged in fourposter bed while Ian and Sara sat on the other side of the room near the bathroom. I had a strange feeling of falling while lying on the bed but put it down to triedness. I did hear a breathe in my ear from where no one was sitting. Sara and Ian both reported seeing a small cat like shadow run across the floor in the middle of the room towards the bed. A few hours later a group were talking on a break and a number of them in different groups had also seen this shadow.
Vigil 5 - Room 16 - Team Leader Vince
This time I nabbed half of the bed while Ian nabbed the other side. Vince sat on the stairs by the ensuite and angel sat on the door step. Again another quiet room apart from the boiler and the pipes for the bathroom. Nothing happened in this room; we had a good laugh when Tracy walkie talkied thought to Phil to let him know that their group had just found one of girls and one of the barmen up in the rose room in a rather compromising position . Also Angel was sensing a male outside of the room making her feel like she shouldnt be in there and that a female in the past had hidden in that room for some time to avoid him; she felt very drained.
Vigil 6 - Free Time
For the start of free time me and Angel shut ourselves into the confrence room but it felt flat so we moved on after about 15mins. We went to the bar area and lazed on the sofas, the whole hotel felt quiet and calm. I did go back up to th egallery and rose room with Ian.... which to my amazement had a chair turn upside on its own ..... NOT!
All in all fantastic location.... very atmospheric.... but a pitty that it was so quiet.... i did manage to get lots of lovely photos though which i will post on here later!
I'd love to go back to this loctaion; plus it was only an hours drive each way for me
