From Utah Beach to the Abbey, war nurse becomes nun

BY GEORGE KRIMSKY REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN

Mother Irene Boothroyd, an 87-year-old a Benedictine nun at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, served as a nurse in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. (Bob Falcetti / RA)

BETHLEHEM -- She landed on Utah Beach, treated wounded soldiers in five countries, crossed Germany with Patton's 3rd Army, witnessed the horrors of Buchenwald, and celebrated V-J Day in a hospital tent near the Czech border.

Not many who lived through so much in World War II are still here to remember on Veterans Day 2007. Fewer are women. Nuns are even rarer.

Back then, she was Helen Boothroyd, a young army nurse from Massachusetts. Today, she is Mother Irene of the Abbey of Regina Laudis. How one became the other is a saga in itself, but, suffice to say, the trail was blazed by war.

On first glance, it might seem difficult to connect the 87-year-old woman wearing a head-to-toe Benedictine habit with that 5-foot-4-inch blonde in an officer's uniform, smiling from a faded photo.

But sit with Mother Irene for awhile, listen to the stories told as if they happened yesterday, watch those blue eyes glisten with memories, and more than six decades seem to melt away...

"So many thousands of men," she said in an interview with the Sunday Republican, talking about all the soldiers she helped treat in battlefield hospitals. "Somehow, although there was never time to really know any of them, they become part of you."

The oldest of the 37 abbey residents, she is still caring for people today and bears the title of "infirmarian."

"She has a nurse's soul," said Mother Margaret Georgina Patton, whose very name resonates with the abbey's World War II origins.

Grave robbed in N.H.
Posted On 11/07/2007 12:01:18

I hope they catch the people responsible for this deplorable act...

HILLSBORO, N.H. -- A grave that was dug up in Hillsboro on Halloween may have been disturbed by people engaging in a ritual, police said.

Police said the grave of Sarah Symonds, who died in 1821, was dug up in the Bible Hill Cemetery. Whoever dug up the grave also took the body, police said.

"The body's certainly missing," said Lt. Darren Remillard.

A caretaker discovered the hole behind Symonds' headstone. It was 5 1/2 feet deep and perfectly rectangular, with mounds of dirt on each side. No trace of the body was left behind.

"We're looking into the reasons why, to see if there's any background that Miss Symonds had in relation to why she would have been taken," Remillard said.

One theory that police are considering is whether it might have been the work of someone who believes in witchcraft.

"With it being Halloween night and the fact that the hole was dug so perfectly, we don't believe it was grave robbers, because the way it was done and the way the dirt was positioned," Remillard said.

Police said that some believe that if a skull is stolen on Halloween night, it will grant powers to a person who holds it. Remillard later backed away from a direct link to witchcraft and apologized for making the association.

Many practitioners of witchcraft, Wicca or paganism contacted local media to protest the link, saying that there is nothing in their beliefs that would call for digging up a grave.

"We believe it's something other than someone digging it up to steal jewelry, so to speak," Remillard said.

Investigators said they have collected evidence and are looking into all possibilities. A monument in the graveyard was also tipped over that night, but it was put back in its place.

Town historians said the Symonds family was well respected, and don't know why her grave would be targeted.

The Blog directed to Connecticut, by Mr. Deel, IAH staff, was uncalled for.. I speak for myself, but the East coast from N. Carolina to Maine and in between is ALIVE with Paranormal activity.. Some are true, some are fabricated, My wife and I research both. Paranormal news is Paranormal News, and if the facts dont suit your beliefs, I am very sorry. Ct. is the Home of the Warrens, with this lawsuit looming, people are interested, especially in the outcome of this case. Once and for all! There is no SLANDER nor DISRESPECT towards the Warrens in my Blogs, just whats moving forward with the legal issues. In fact, THEY, are why I dwell in their realm, since they had a show on WDRC radio AM Halloween Night 1972 in Hartford, Ct. Sometimes when you look in the mirror....It's not the same person............Looking back

Exorcism
Posted On 11/01/2007 14:14:22

can anyone prove, proof positive that they have witnessed or been involved in an actual possessed exorcism ritual sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church and preformed by a Roman Catholic Priest in (good standing) with the Vatican? And why would the Vatican rely on lay persons with no real hands on experience, without proper study and education on the subject, even deal with these so called Demonologist. If I pick up a book and read about rocks does that mean I'm a geologist...Just a thought

Taken from the Catholic protocol and Rituals for exorcisms

There are three kinds of demonic influence:

The Exorcism is mainly used in the third kind: Possession.

1- Temptation: For everybody, including Jesus when he was fasting and praying for 40 days!… you and your friends will also be tempted, specially when you pray and fast long, like Jesus. (Mt.4).

2- Obsession, compulsion, oppression They are very frequent, causing the impulse to masturbation, stealing, lying, hitting the relatives, homosexuality, alcohol, drugs, irrational compulsions, depressions… Here the person may have an irresistible impulse to perform something he well knows it is wrong or irrational, or an anxious and inescapable preoccupation with an idea or emotion that he realizes it is not right… in contrast with the demonic possession, here the person can exercise volition, he is capable of voluntary actions, and he realizes he is doing something bad or wrong.

3- Demonic Possession: A demon takes over the personality of a human, so that he is incapable of voluntary thinking or actions: Most heretics, those involved in the occult… Here the person is even unable to recognize that he may be wrong… at times, the individual normal personality is replaced by another, specially while talking about a specific subject: He is fine, except when you touch that special subject… other times, not often, he may manifest bizarre symptoms, such as hysteric behavior, incoherent speech, uncontrollable physical movements, with extraordinary feats o physical strength that may be self-destructive or destructive to others or to material objects…

In all instances, it has to considered that the symptoms or actions may be due to pathological (natural) factors rather than by the supernatural power of evil spirits.

Official Church exorcisms are rare, and mainly on these kind of Demonic Possession, but those which are performed are usually administered by priests who are special delegates of their local bishops, always after a very rigorous physical and psychological examination that rules out any natural explanation for the problems. And since 1972, the official Church declared that the minor order of exorcist would not longer be received.

What Happened To That One?

THE BROOKFIELD POSSESSION CASE:
The Story Behind The Story

In 1980 an eleven year-old Connecticut boy came under possession by not one or two, but forty-three separate and distinct entities, each one of which answered to a name. For over a year these berserk, inhuman spirits engaged in a deliberate program of terror, mayhem and murder. The case made front page news around the world, day in and day out, for over six months. It was also a case, from the religious point of view, that was completely out of control. Virtually everyone who attempted to assist the family came under attack. Physical, violent attack. The presiding entities attacked the boy, his family, his relatives, the demonologist, and every single priest assigned to the investigation.

At the height of the siege, known then as the Brookfield Possession Case, these bizarre, otherworldly spirits were causing pandemonium to occur simultaneously in three separate houses; they invaded local rectories as well as the chancery offices of the Catholic church, twenty five miles away where they systematically oppressed the higher clergy supervising the case; they manifested inside the home of the principal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, ruthlessly tearing apart whole portions of their house; and finally, in culmination of their berserk fury, they extended their possession beyond the boy to a second individual, before consummating their siege by overtly murdering an innocent man in an open field just before sunset on the evening of February 16, 1981. Arrested for that so-called murder was a young man by the name of Arne Cheyenne Johnson. It was Johnson who had been the second person afflicted with possession in the case.

In October 1981 Arne Johnson was put on trial for murder in Danbury Superior Court. The trial, in a word, was a travesty. All references to the possession case which preceded the murder were disallowed. Testimony by priests in the case was not permitted. Testimony by the Warrens was blocked. Testimony by medical authorities, that the fatal wound could not have been delivered from a position outside the body, never got heard. Tape recordings made of the possessing entity - boastfully predicting the murder it would cause - were never played. Instructions to the jury omitted all reference to the religious significance to the case. And while the lights strangely flashed on and off in the courtroom throughout the trial, Arne Johnson was nonetheless found guilty of the crime based on nothing more than circumstantial evidence. The complex possession case which had occurred the year before never became a matter of legal record. The full story, in short, never got told.

At least it never got told in court. However, a record of the entire event did exist and ultimately got told in book form, through a nonfiction title called The Devil In Connecticut which was published by Bantam Books in 1983, and has now been reprinted again

Inconsistant Dudley Town Facts
Posted On 10/24/2007 06:42:10

Reseach done by Reverend Gary P. Dudley. I and others have reresearched said facts and what we researched is TRUE. The town clerk at Cornwall Ct. is very helpful...You Decide...

It has been said: "you can't throw a rock in the Paranormal world without hitting the Warren's at some point," and central to any study of Dudleytown are Ed and Lorraine Warren. As founders of the New England Society for Psychic Research in 1952, they gained great notoriety for their investigations of "The Amityville Horror," and also for their books and lectures. They have received such wide recognition that most newspapers and magazines with look for a quote from them, and they have been featured on many TV shows dealing with the supernatural, in addition to having been featured in a film entitled "The Haunted." They proclaim, without any help from ordination that they are "Demonologists," although their Roman Catholic religion has specially trained Priests for that duty, and are NOT supported publically by their church. Their followers staunchly defend them, and say to any Warrens critic: "IF YOU ONLY KNEW THEM..."

Among their many books (all now out of print, but easily found in most libraries), we will be focusing on one--Ghost Hunters. In it is the most unique story of Dudleytown in print: "The Haunted Village."

The story begins with the Warrens saying that they had heard the stories of Dudleytown in their youth, and then proceed into the "history" of the town without telling us if we are reading what they heard or what they "investigated"--it is presented as fact. Totally ignoring any semblance of research, they not only seemed to ignore the facts, which were easy enough to obtain if they had wanted, they also ignored all the other stories that had gone on before them, and apparently found something that nobody had ever heard of before.

We will examine their findings, and point out the places they went amiss (which, by the way, is virtually EVERY paragraph). Please note that all references to their book come from the St. Martins paperback edition, which stated that Ed and Lorraine had an additional (pardon the pun) "Ghost" writer by the name of Robert David Chase help them.

Before we begin, I will state that their book is the ONLY one to feature the outrageous background history containing Governor Thomas Dudley. Also, it is the FIRST story that I am aware of that contains ANY mention of "hoofed footed creatures." Additionally, it is the ONLY Dudleytown story to get so many facts out of place, and OVER 100 YEARS off. It does NOT follow the traditional Dudleytown Legend that appeared in over 15 books, and hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles before or since it. It is generally NOT quoted by other writers because of that. In fact, in talking to one or two reporters and one other author and scores of Paranormal Societies, the Warren version of the Dudleytown story is NOT considered valid.

So, here is a page-by-page commentary on "The Haunted Village."

PAGE 173
The Warrens STATE that they had often heard the stories, and that so many people had told them things that: "ultimately we had no choice but to look into the matter".

First, we are not told wether what follows should be believed or not. As the story will be presented as fact, most readers will assume that it is. We are never told where they got their story OR facts from, as the Warrens' do NOT cite the sources for THEIR story, and repeated email to them went unanswered).

PAGE 174.

1. This starts the history portion of their story. We are told that Dudleytown is NEAR Cornwall.

FACT: Dudleytown IS PART of Cornwall. It was NEVER a town.

2. They state that Edmund Dudley embezzled money from the King's treasury.

FACT: This is false, as any history book would have told them. Edmund was a scapegoat, as he was the "exchequer" (we would say Financial Advisor) for King Henry VII. Henry had raped the English Economy, and when he died his son, Henry VIII, came to the throne. The people wanted blood, and (to make a long story short), Edmund was handy.

PAGE 175
1. Near the bottom of the page, they state that the four brothers "discovered" the area in which Dudleytown would be built, and founded the town in 1632.

FACT: This is, of course, over 100 years off! It was founded in 1747 by Thomas Griffis, who bought the land at an auction. The brothers would not even be born until (Gideon) 1706, (Abiel) 1710, and (Barzillai) 1725, which does, of course, mean that there were only three brothers.

Same page. 2. They imply that Gov Thomas Dudley was part of the founding of Dudleytown.

FACT: Gov Dudley had died about 84 years before.

Same Page. 3. They state that Gov. Dudley was found "hacked to death in the vicinity of Dudleytown, and the murderer was never caught."

FACT: Ed and Lorraine come into conflict on this page with ANYONE familiar with Massachusetts History with that statement, and it is the quote that began my look into the Warrens story. Any student of Massachusetts history will tell you that Gov. Thomas Dudley died on July 31, 1653 at his home in Roxbury of old age--he was 77. He is buried there for all to see.

Same page. 4. They plainly state that the brothers were nephews of Gov. Thomas.

FACT: They were, of course, members of a completely different family of Dudleys'.

Same page. 5. They say the brothers discovered the land on their return from the French and Indian war, which lasted a decade.

FACT: Not even close---the French and Indian war did not even start until 1754. It lasted till 1763. (That's only nine years) . Again, 100 years off.

Pages 175/176. They state that General Herman Swift was away with his boss, Gen. Washington, when his wife died. She actually died in 1804...and good Gen. Heman Swift was at home. They then say that Gen. Swift went insane, and had to be put away. The town records say General HEMAN Swift was "slightly demented from old age" (senile) and died peacefully. ADDITIONALLY, George Washington--the FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY--died in 1799, as any 6th grade school child will tell you.

Page 176. "Dr. William Clark built a stately mansion on the edge of Dudleytown......" Again, WRONG. Dr. William CLARKE built a small summer home IN Dudleytown. After his wife Harriot's death, he built a two story red brick house in Cornwall. IT IS STILL THERE!

Same page (176) Dr. "Clark" happened BEFORE Mary Cheney (please notice the chronology they present....EVERYTHING is wrong).

Same Page (176). Mary Cheney "found her Dudleytown upbringing to be frightening." Mary Cheney was NOT born or raised in Dudleytown. See the "Deaths at Dudleytown" section.

Same Page (176)....Quote "Year in and year out, Dudleytown men, women, and children were mysteriously killed..." they go on to list the most horrible ways of dying that had even MY hair on end!! FACT---there was only ONE mysterious happening (IF you believe the curse!) EVERY SEVEN YEARS. No more.

Same page (176) They say Brophy's wife died in a fall. FACT: Town records say she died of "consumption." (TB).

Page 177. Brophy was the last resident there.
FACT: Dr. Clarke was. Actually, there STILL ARE residents there!

They then begin to quote the usual deaths at Dudleytown, and then quote part of a poem by H.P. Lovecraft. It is simply to add atmosphere to their story, and give them a chance to add a few more "hoofed-footed" creatures. Afterwards, they open themselves up to more criticism on Page 180 by relating a story of a TV station crew, which had some unexplainable problems with their equipment.

I say "open themselves" up again, because the TV station crew belonged to COMCAST, then a small cable company with a public station THAT STILL IS IN EXISTENCE. The Warrens say they obtained no film.......(you can see this coming, can't you?)...I have found out that they DID!! While not the best, the film does exist, and the crew claim that there old equipment just decided, halfway through, to (pardon the pun) "give up the ghost." It WAS legitimately broke, and was repaired soon after.

The Warrens finish by admitting that they can not vouch for the stories of the curses early on (then why relate them?) but say that demonic forces are there now (page 182). But where is their proof? While there are PLENTY of pictures in the book on other things--there are NONE of Dudleytown.

While I applaud the Warrens for admitting that they "could not vouch" for the early "curse" stories, I am left to wonder why they even told them. Good historical tales ALWAYS include ONLY the facts--which they did not do. In fact, if one were to read "The Haunted Village" critically, you would wonder why it was even published.

I would also applaud the Warrens for stating on page 182 that "What I am afraid of is that with all the satanic rituals going on up there, something really horrible will happen", but they then turn around (after admitting that they couldn't "vouch" for the VERY BASIS--the early stuff--of the legend), and make the story so appealing that their readers WANT to go there!

You see, historical deduction uses the "early stuff" as a foundation--so that if the foundation crumbles, there is NOTHING left. Most researchers would stop there. Not the Warrens'. That is what the Warrens based their entire story off of. A careful reading will show you that their "look" into the matter resulted in nothing. Where is the source for their stories? Where is their proof? There is none!

Now, before you ask--YES! I did email them and asked for their sources. For two years I asked them. It was not until I sent emails to all Paranormal Societies asking for help in keeping people away from Dudleytown that I received a letter from Ed's nephew John. What he did was criticize THIS page for "attacks" on the Warrens' validity. When pressed, John said he would ask Ed. My answer still has not arrived. Additionally, when he broadsided me on the Lou Gentile Show, I challenged Jeff to answer a few questions, and email me back. I even promised to send him a FREE copy of the book---but no email yet.

So--do you consider this an attack. Admittedly, it could be conceived as one. However....

The major problem with the Warrens is that they have a huge following, and their books sold millions (they are out of print now)---and the information is WRONG--so far off that I (as a history teacher) would not even give it a grade! They are supposed to be the BEST. They are certainly THE BEST KNOWN of all the "researchers," but their research is so flawed that (in any intelligent persons mind), it casts doubt on their other "investigations." How much of their OTHER stories can you believe?

I originally stated at this point, that at their lectures, they allow NO questions on ANYTHING except the subject they are speaking on, and that since they had NEVER spoken on Dudleytown, you would NOT be allowed to ask anything about it should you attend their lectures (their speaking engagements are listed on their web site--go to LINKS). Should you try--you MAY be ushered out of the room! (according to others who have been there!). HOWEVER, a few folks have emailed me lately to say that they HAVE spoken on Dudleytown, but answered very few questions about it. INSTEAD, they have been heard to say: "We will not tell you of Dudleytown--YOU go and tell us what YOU feel...THEN we will tell you ours."

Folks--they KNOW Dudleytown is CLOSED. Ed has been ESCORTED out of the place by DEF. He KNOWS it is closed, and he can not go there. Think about that.

By the way, do NOT try to email them with ANY criticism or corrections--they will NOT answer you.

About 10 years ago Ed was on a talk show speaking of Dudleytown. He spoke of Dr. Clarke's wife going MAD in 1937, and running wildly through the woods. Lydia C. Herkimer, daughter of Dr. Clarke, called in. She told Ed that IF they were hearing voices in the woods, perhaps they heard a woman's laughter because she was sure her mothers was laughing at their tales, as she hadn't died until 1948! She told Ed how beautiful the woods were, and their enjoyment at having been raised there. After the call, Ed said that she was JUST A LAY PERSON, and "of course she missed it all." He DID NOT make the connection that SHE was Dr. Clarke's DAUGHTER!

Then again, their research on EVERYTHING in Dudleytown misses the connections.

Not only that, their research on Amityville is no better. For one report, click here

But, again, read their story---then look to history and facts. Decide for yourselves.

Lorraine Warren Lawsuit
Posted On 10/10/2007 09:07:05

An interesting lawsuit filed in Ct. Check out this website very interesting

DANBURY, CT: (www.geocities.com/devilbustedinct   A major lawsuit is pending against world famous ghost-buster Lorraine Warren of Monroe, Connecticut, for her involvement in the authoring of the book, The Devil in Connecticut, originally published by Bantam Books in 1983. The book details the supposed case of demonic possession of an 11 year old boy which lead to the much publicized “demon murder” stabbing death of forty-year old Alan Bono by nineteen year old Arne Cheyenne Johnson in Brookfield, Connecticut in 1981. Carl Glatzel Jr. and David Glatzel of Brookfield are suing Warren, along with author Gerald Brittle, IUniverse.com, the agency who recently republished the book, and the William Morris Agency of New York, who represents both Warren and Brittle. Other charges and defendants are expected to follow.

According to Glatzel’s attorney, Greg T. Nolan of Febbroriello, Conti, and Levy Law Firm of Torrington, Connecticut, both Warren, Brittle, and their agencies are facing several charges including invasion of the right to privacy, libel, and intentional affliction of emotional distress for the supposed false information contained in the book, The Devil in Connecticut, which was reprinted by IUniverse.com in 2006 without the Glatzel’s knowledge or consent. According to Carl Glatzel Jr., who was sixteen at the time, and other members of his family, his younger brother David suffered from a mental illness that Lorraine Warren and her late husband, Ed, who died in August of 2006, diagnosed as “demonic possession.” The Roman Catholic Church, under advice and consult of the Warrens, attempted four minor rites of exorcism on the young boy in 1980 to rid him of “forty-two demons,” all of which were failures. The Warrens also claimed in the book that Carl Jr. was ‘oppressed by demons’ and they used him “as a pawn to instigate violence and arouse skepticism.” The Warrens’ concluded that a ‘Satanic death curse was placed on both the Glatzel boys."

On February 16, 1981, an acquaintance of the Glatzel family, Arne Cheyenne Johnson stabbed his landlord, forty-year old Alan Bono to death. His attorney, Martin J. Minella of Waterbury, Connecticut, attempted to enter an unprecedented plea of “not guilty by virtue of demonic possession” into the Danbury Superior Court. Minella stated that Johnson, who was the boyfriend of Debbie Glatzel, David’s older sister, had also become possessed as a direct result of challenging the demons to “take him on” during the minor rites of exorcism in which he assisted, and therefore was not responsible for the crime which took place in front of a dog grooming kennel then located on Federal Road in Brookfield.. When the trial began in September of 1981, acting judge, Robert J. Callahan rejected the plea, stating there was no such defense, and that it would be “irrelative and unscientific” to allow it as such. Minella later changed his tactic, claiming Johnson acted in self-defense instead. Johnson, after a much-publicized trial, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and served five years in prison. While the Arch Diocese of Bridgeport acknowledged involvement in the case at the time, they have since remained silent on the matter.

Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are devout Catholics, received much publicity in the late 70s from their involvement in “The Amityville Horror” case, which many today claim to have been a hoax, and have since published ten books about their supernatural investigations and adventures. Glatzel challenges the Warren’s credibility, stating that, “My brother was never possessed. He, along with my family, was manipulated and exploited, something the Warrens were very good at, and along with their author, Gerald Brittle, they concocted a phony story about demons in an attempt to get rich and famous at our expense, and we have the evidence to prove it.” Glatzel also states, “The Warrens told my family numerous times that we would be millionaires and the book would help get my sister’s boyfriend, Arne, out of jail. I knew from day one it was a lie, but as a child, there was nothing I could really do about it.”

When asked why he waited twenty seven years to address the problem, Glatzel explained it wasn’t until a friend of his brought his attention to the fact that the book, The Devil in Connecticut, was not only back in print, but was also being planned as a major motion picture by a production company in Hollywood who has since had to halt production due to internal conflicts. “Reluctantly, I read the book for the first time in twenty-seven years and was simply mummified. How could anyone believe this?” he asked by telephone from his parent’s home in Brookfield. “Many instances in the book are complete lies, and I appear as the villain in the book simply because I had a sane voice and knew that the story was false since the beginning. There were no demons. It was all about money, he said. When asked about the movie, Glatzel replied “If there is anything I can do about it, there is no way there will be a movie about me and my family based on these lies. It took me twenty seven years to get where I am today and there is no way I am putting that in jeopardy by allowing this to happen all over again.” Glatzel goes on to say, “I had to drop out of school in tenth grade due to the ridicule and negative attention the story brought and was unable to further my education. I had to learn to deal with ridicule and people being afraid of me. I had to learn to fight to protect myself and my younger brothers. I finally understood why I lost friends, relationships, business opportunities, and ultimately had to be ashamed of my own family name based upon a lie.”

Upon finding out that Warren has been lecturing about his family for over two decades, has had their story written up in several of her books, and has been selling a video about his family, prompted him to see a lawyer. “I am not in the business of suing people,” he said from his parent’s home in Brookfield, “but enough is enough and it about time peo
