An Investigation Gone Awry
Posted On: 01/17/2008 10:05:38

Back in the summer we did an investigation in Illinois.  We had received a desperate email from a family who had several claims of activity in their home.  When we went to the pre-investigation we really did not find anything that would lead us to do an extensive investigation.  However the family was so adamant about the paranormal activity and they were so distraught that we did schedule to return with our group.  Which is what we did.  Because of the sensitivity that appeared to be present, a skeptical husband and children in the house, we only took a very small group and basic equipment.  We spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 hours in the house and their were no paranormal occurrences while we were there.  WE took several photos, video footage and audio recordings.  We documented in great length there dialogue about the happenings within the house.  We told them when we were finished that we would contact them as soon as we went over the evidence.  We did not find anything within photos or video.  However we did get an EVP from the master bedroom in the house.  We returned to their house with the EVP for them to hear, we informed them at that time that to date we had not found anything else in the house.  During that visit we set up the recorder and Al took a few more photos.  We parted "In good Graces"

I had told them we would get a summary of what we had found out to them and then all hell broke loose in our personal lives.  Al sustained an injury which laid him up for a while and he was on some pretty strong pain meds, my elderly parents were going through some abuse at a nursing home they were at in Indiana.  We finally had to move from Illinois to Indiana to deal with that situation.  So with so much going on we did have a delay in the summary getting out to them.  However there were emails sent back and forth and we even urged them that if they were unhappy with what we had found or our lack of ability to get further into this to find another paranormal group and even offered to help find them one.

We moved to Indiana in August and in the frame of time we have been here my Mom has been hospitalized 8 times.  My Dad is a Parkinson's patient and we have them both at home so my time has been limited.  As soon as we obtained some help within the home situation my first order of business was to get this summary out.  Which is what I did.  I also wrote an article for the web site pertaining to the info they gave us and what we found.  Now please keep in mind that the article was written based on the emails, a written letter and recorded info at the investigation from the family and written documents we collected during the investigation.  I get this very ugly email from them about how they didn't say this and they didn't say that and how they did get another group and how they had several people give them negative info about us...  From where I don't know???  All of the info within the web article was from their dialogue...  not our!!!

What started this was that they contacted us wanting some info back that we had asked them to obtain for us...  a simple recording of night time activity.  I told her we would transfer the recording and then send her the tapes.  Yes I did remind them that the information we obtained belonged to MGHAPI and that they had signed a release agreeing to that and that this did include any evidence on the tapes we asked them to record for us.  We also informed them that any evidence we collected that was clean of any paranormal activity would be destroyed.

When I did the post on the web page I also made sure that the photos were not enlargeable so that nothing personal could be viewed with clarity, such as personal photos.  We did not use there names and protected their street address.  I feel we did every thing that we could do in this.  They were notified about what we had found and the only delay was with the written summary!   I feel now like we did not give them the answer they wanted and they are unhappy about that.

I didn't mean to get so long winded with this but it confuses me.  We made three trips to the location, we never charge for our services, we kept them informed and we protected their privacy and only used their dialogue to do an article.  Is there something more we could have done?  Has anyone else on here ever been confronted with a problem such as this?  This is the first and only time this has ever happened to us and we are more them a little baffled.  Any input would be appreciated!  Negative or positive.

From reading this it sounds like you did everything right,
it’s not your fault you didn’t give them the answer they were looking for.

I have to agree with willfromeverett the only other thing
you could have done was to have them set up their own recorder and camera to
try and catch something.

You have to remember that there are people out there that
really want to believe that they actually have something going on, when they
don’t.

I guess people don’t understand that we have real jobs and
lives like everyone else, remember you can only please some of the people some
of the time.

Anyway take care and good luck.

There are the paranormal groups that are in it for the fame and fortune. It would stand to reason that there are people that want it as well. This case sounds like the person who called your grouop in wanted something found to prove that they were not crazy to the rest of the family members.

Thanks Will!  We did get an EVP from the house and we took it out to them to listen to.  However there was nothing else to report.  They were not satisfied with our effort I suppose.  Thanks for the luck!

It sounds like they have no compassion or understanding and probably would have been inconsiderate of your time and effort no matter what you would have done.  There is no reason for people to complain in that way when they were not charged, you gave them no guarantees you would find anything and you kept their information anonymous.  I say forget about them, some people are just born to be negative.  It sounds like you have enough to deal with without worrying about people like that.

Take care and God Bless

Thanks a lot for your input and I am considering pulling the article.  It was done because they initially had asked us if we could include their personal story in our web pages.  I never realized it would have such a negative outcome!  Thank you again!

Hi. It sounds to me like you are correct you did not tell them what they wanted to hear. Personally I would not put anything from a Home investigation on a website. Not even if the home owners signed a waver. That is just me! I know others do it, and I have no problem with it, but as for myself I would not put anything from a home investigation on a website. Besides that! I think you did everything correctly

I am thinking of starting a free banner exchange for anyone with a paranormal website. If you think this is a good idea then let me know. If there is enough interest I'd start it up.
