Question about formal banishment rituals.
Posted On: 02/13/2008 13:57:43

With the flurry of paranormal shows on TV, I have seen only one banishment ritual that was not Catholic in nature. But it was done by a Christian Wiccan, so it was heavy in the Catholic flavor.   That got me thinking:  Do Baptists, Methodists, etc have formal banishment rituals?  I now live in the South, and I see many ministers 'laying on hands, banishing demons' on tv.  BUT  those are not formalized ceremonies.  Are there Baptist, Methodist, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah's Witness, (name your flavor of Christianity here), Judiac or Islamic ceremonies banishing demons?  There has to be an Islamic ritual.  They have the same demons as Christians.  How about the non-Abrahamic like Hindu or Buddahists?  How about Asatru or Celtic Reclaimation ones?  I realize Hollywood has alot to do with making the Catholic excercisim so well known.  But when something demonic comes into people's houses, the only place they know where to go is the Catholic Church, even if they aren't Catholic.  Sound off if your religion has a formal ritual for the banishment of evil.

I do not want to open up a can of worms here, but you are correct most Christian orders that broke away from the Catholic church or the Holy Roman Church what ever you want to call it do not have banishment or exorcism rights in their orders. So they refer people to the the catholic church if they feel the need of it for investigation into exorcism.  You have to remember all these sub division Christian faiths were once under the Holy Roman Church until they broke away from it and formed various Christian sects on their own. The Catholic church recognizes demonic possession, so why would not a minister who has counseled a person family and evaluated that it is beyond psychological reasoning of what they are going through, Go  to or refer the people to a denomination that does practice these rights and has vast knowledge and understanding of demonic entities. Its just like a group goes into a house that has activity in it. To much activity for their liking or knowledge, they would refer the people to someone who deals in that kind of thing, instead of trying to fix the situation themselves.

From what I have seen, manny religions ignore the thret of evil entitys. "If bad happens then it must be the person's fault because of the wrong they had comitted at a past time." I have seen and learned this is not always true. Sometimes bad happens to good folks. Finding a good support of friends and family is verry important. Experience is said to be the best teacher. Even when we can learn from others.

No, actually my point is that even though I'm sure there are other religions that do have formal banishment ceremonies, most people are only familiar with the one by the Catholics. (I guess I wasn't clear in my line of thinking...)  Some religions do not even have a banishment ritual.  My friend is a clergy of the Lutherans.  I had a discussion with him today about this.  As clergy,  they can bless a house, but they aren't prepared for a banishment.  He's referred people--as a clergy member--to the Catholic diocese on four occassions when he was certain the house needed more than a blessing.

I feel like the religious organizations that do not have a plan for the banishment of bad things are neglecting their flock.  I did find out that the Buddahists have several banishment rituals, depending on the type of demon.  I know Wiccans and Pagans have an 'emergency plan.'  I'm pretty sure Hindus have at least one.  But why are so many of the Protestant branches without one?  Did it have to do with The Reformation and the Age of Reason when some of these branches branched out?  Fascinating thought.

Through out history and in every culture these things have been written about in all religions. Banishments for them et. Who does the banishment is usually a person within that culture who knows of the entities fully. You mention formalized ceremonies, each culture has their own way of doing it. Thing here is the recognition of the fact that through history all cultures believed or had some knowledge of these entities they called them various names and they knew them in various forms and orders. To me thats the main point here, the recognition of them through history, not the ceremonies of each culture to banish them, but the fact that they have been written about.
