Types Of Hauntings
Residual hauntings are somewhat hard to describe, but are fairly common. Also known as
"psychic impressions," residual hauntings are considered by many as the most experienced
type of haunting. When a ghost or event is seen over and over doing the same thing, this is
a residual haunting. Most footsteps and ghostly noises that are heard in a haunted place
are of the residual haunting type. The residual sounds can be heard over and over. For
example, it is said that in the Queen Mary's Second Class Pool Room, one can hear
splashing, though the pool is now empty!
Think of a residual haunting as a movie being re-run on TV day after day. It is believed by
ghost hunters that some events, due to perhaps strong emotional energy attached to it,
imprint themselves somehow on the environment where the event took place. Sort of
"trapped in time," the event is recorded in the atmosphere of a place. If one were to see a
ghost doing the same activity over and over, and with no response to the present
environment, it is most likely a residual haunting. Residual hauntings are past events playing
in the present, but with no interaction with today.
How can residual hauntings occur? Energy is spirit and spirit is life. All of us are spirit, with
or without the physical body, and we live and exist within spirit. Spirit is the life-force of all,
whether plant, animal or human being, and is everywhere. Everything that is, exists within
spirit. Spirit or energy is everywhere. Thus, is it possible for an event or person to imprint its
energy upon a place? Most ghost hunters believe so...
Intelligent hauntings are those in which the ghost interacts with the present. It is intelligent, in
that it may communicate with those on the earthly plane. The disembodied personhas
elected for some reason to stay or maybe just visit the physical world, due to a connection
with a person, place or thing. Intelligent hauntings may also occur due to a spirit's
compelling need to deliver a message from the other side of the grave, or to watch over
loved ones. In addition, it is also plausible that intelligent hauntings occur due to
attachments the ghostly person feels through memories, trauma, tragedy or any other
emotional tie, effectively binding the mind to:
1) maybe not realize the person;s body is indeed deceased
2) completing unfinished earthly business
3) re-living traumatic events, as the mind replays the event in trying to comprehend
4) perhaps hang around loved ones or persons the ghost finds like company with
5) not letting go due to fear of death and moving on to a new world
It is important to understand that there is no devil, demons or evil spirits as traditionally
taught -- just disembodied people with varying personalities. Some ghostly people, are
negative, while others are positive and very upbeat. One may imagine that many people
you meet here on earth range from joyous to downright angry and dark. Ghosts, or spirits of
people are no different. One must understand that a person does not lose the mind he or
she has upon death of the physical body. Though not common, angry spirits can be
encountered, no doubt. And to be trapped in the earthly realm as a spirit is a form of hell; for
it is fear that holds ghosts of intelligent hauntings here no matter what the intent. Whether it
is worry about someone, anger of having died and suffering loss, condemnation or doubt, all
are simply different forms of fear found in the lowest part of hell called the earthly plane.
More can be garnered about this in the Spirit World. Ghosts, or people trapped in fear do
not need "cast out," or "exorcised;" they need patience and understanding - from one human
being to another. For it has been said, "Ghosts are people, too."
Intelligent hauntings manifest typically in what some may consider "signs." Hiding or moving
objects, doors opening and closing, strange sounds, spiritual presence (goosebumps, eg),
disturbance of electrical devices are all examples of ghosts attempting to gain someone's
attention and communicate from the spirit realm. One may also experience dreams and
visions of loved ones, especially right before or after sleep when most are open to contact
(and the left brain is quieted down). It is also not uncommon to physically see a ghostly
loved on, as well. The best thing one can do is remain open to the contact and listen to what
is heard deep within, as that is how ghosts primarily communicate. Speak to the spirit, your
ghostly friend, in words of peace, understanding, blessing and love.
Portal hauntings are widely debated and yet much is known. Some ghost hunters believe
that portals exist between the physical and spirit worlds. Portals would then act as a door for
ghosts to cross over from the other side to the physical realm. Others believe portal
hauntings to be doorways between the earth and other dimensions...even other worlds! Still,
no one knows for sure if portals actually exist and if so, what they may be.
Some paranormal investigators believe that strange entities (that appear other-worldly and
do not seem human) captured by ghost photography, seem to be around areas with high
activity and are thus suspected to be portal hauntings. These portal hauntings have also
been identified as having a high occurrence around graveyards or near underground
waterways for some reason. Some have fostered the notion that graveyards may have been
built unknowingly, yet guided by the subconscious or higher powers that be, in areas that
portals exist.
With all this said, we simply do not know if portals exist at all. It is interesting to note that
most near death experiencers recall going through a tunnel of light during their cross over
from this world to the next. But can this tunnel of light work in the opposite direction, and
allow ghosts or disembodied persons to come back to earth and visit? And are there other
tunnels or portals that may explain some of the strange type of hauntings people have
experienced?
Finally, in ghost photographs, many ghost hunters strongly believe that "vortexes" are
evidence of portals. A vortex usually appears as a streak of white ectoplasm mist, and is
typically confused with photos of mistakenly snapped camera straps in front of the lens.
Poltergeists or poltergeist hauntings are most likely not even hauntings at all. The German
word, "poltergeist," means "noisy ghost." A common thread between different poltergeist
hauntings has strongly indicated that they are caused by psychokinesis (the ability to move
things by power of the mind alone).
Usually poltergeist hauntings center around an adolescent girl (although young males and
even adults have exhibited the same phenomena) in the household. Typically, this central
person is usually emotionally disturbed in some fashion, and is the root cause of objects
moving, knocking sounds (and other noises), the turning on and off of lights and electrical
appliances, etc.
What is interesting is that the person whom the activity centers around, is unaware that they
are the one who is creating the disturbance. But in true poltergeist hauntings, none of the
activity will continue after the person is removed from the environment, as they are not there
to create it. Poltergeist hauntings typically will go away as quickly as they began.

For the longest time I could never figure out why this area and the property I live on seemed to be so haunted. Last night I got a history lesson. I guess your never too old to learn history. During the Ghost Town tour, I got sent back in time. Almost like being sucked into a time machine. I found out that the street that I live on is Indian Burial ground for one...that's not good. The Indians once inhabited this area all along my street. Also, people have found many arrowheads in the dirt around here too. Not far from my house, within walking distance about 30 yards is a hill where two young boys stumble upon a cave in the side of that hill. When they both entered the cave, they came up on two small skeletons of young children. Which later turned out to be two small Indian children from the area. Then I also found out when the Flume was being constructed back in 1905, chinese men were hired to help build this flume ( and flume is a large canal use to carry a large amount of water) after completion of the flume, these chinese men were all shot dead and burried in a mass grave at the base of this hill. Then later as years pass, the bones were discovered by local men who were just looking around the area for minerals. The mass grave was uncovered. This was all taking place during the California Gold Rush. I was always wondering why this area seemed to be so haunted. As the park I manage has so much activity of the spirit world. A thought was brought to mind by a very good friend of mine. And it made alot of sense. For all the ghost hunters out there, that do this as a science, and the ones that do this as a hobby or for fun. How many of you actually take the time to send these spirits home? Remember, these are lost souls, and some of them don't realize they are dead. I also feel it is our job as a ghost hunters/ investigators to also have a kind heart and send these people home..to the other side of which we call heaven. Some of you don't have religious beliefs, and the majority of you do. I feel it is also our duty to take heart and send them on where they belong. If they choose to go, then we have completed our task. If they choose not to go in fear of being judged, at least we have made our attempt. I know alot of you are saying to yourselves, "Well..if we do this then there won't be a ghost to investigate". Here's where we are so wrong. People die everyday, and death is always around each and every one of us. It's the cycle of life. When my group conducts an investigation, I am compelled within my heart to send these lost spirits home to where they need to be. One investigation that we did was at a campground near the area we live, and when we took pictures, we found two small children that were lost in their demension. These two children followed us all over that campground, and became attached to us. I couldn't stand the thought of knowing that they had no guidance, no one to lead them home. Both of them stuck here in their dark and lonely prison. I told the both of them to go to the light, and there they will seek family and loves ones that are waiting for their return. A week later our group returned to the campground to find that the children were no longer there. As 178 pictures were taken, not one revealed the presence of those children. I felt the job was completed and they went home. I feel it is our duty as investigators to take part in this and giving these lost souls freedom to move on. I have pictures in my "pics" section of my profile to prove of their presence. As they are now just memories of two beautiful little children that made that trip home to God. And if you believe...Miracles can happen.
On friday night about 9:30pm, the LIPS team took off to conduct another investigation at our most favorite place...Tillie Creek Campground. In the past, we have picked up alot of activity in that area alone, more than any other place in the valley. Come to find out, it is the actual site of the Whiskey Flats Massacre, where a group of Indians were all killed under the command of Captain McLaughlin. They were all burried at that site, which is now a local campground. During the investigation, strange things occured, and I mean strange. My son was able to feel the pain of one victim who was shot in the back, that also had to do with Gold during the Gold rush era. I channeled in on a little girl by the name of Loretta who was only 7 years old when she died. She was cold and scared, and wanted so much to find her mother. My daughter and Som who was doing the EVP, picked up the sound of that little girl saying..."Can You Help Me?, at first the girl was giggling and laughing, which soon turned to tears of fright. Mikel, one of my team members was video tapping and getting audio of the investigation, he would stop and take pictures, then video tape. There were 5 different videos that were taken. After our investigation of Tillie Creek, we headed 3 miles away to the 1800's cemetery. That was a short investigation, as someone on the hill not far away was watching our every move. It was only obvious to see the flash of cameras in the middle of a dark cemetery. We could see the glow each time this person took a hit off his cigarette. So we made that investigation a very short one as we didn't want the Sheriff showing up. We had all left, and headed back home, awaiting to see and hear what we possibly captured. After downloading all the pictures, video, and evp. Something very strange took us all into shock as we heard the audio of the video that Mikel had recorded. In the first audio was the sound of a drum beating, and in tune. Almost the sound of drums when someone was about to be executed by firing squad. Or the sound of drums as if soldiers going into battle. The first evp recorded, the drums were loud, as if they were just a few feet away from the group. In the second evp, the drums were still there, but just a slight more distance this time. Then as we were all walking away, you could still hear the drum sounding off in the background but slowly fading off. Then on the Cemetery evp, it must have followed us! because you can clearly hear the drum. And this cemetery was 3 miles away from the campground! Each and every team member there that night...not one team member heard the sound of a drum...Not one! Only the distance barking of a dog and a few birds in the trees that we woke up during the investigation. But surely no beating of a drum. Was this the haunting of a Soldier from Captain McLaughlin's Calvery? Was it possibly a drum beat as the soldiers marched into battle? or the beat of a drum before the execution of 35 men, women and children from a Indian tribe that was massacred in the area back in 1863 by Captain McLaughlin and his men? We maybe will never know the answer, but rest assure..that was surely one night we will never forget. This area of the Kern River Valley is alive with history, and surely a dark secret of the dead that remain here. It is our job of the Lake Isabella Paranormal Society to research these findings, and investigate these areas. Even the dead can tell tales, and give the living the understanding that they do indeed exsist. We've got the proof. Welcome to the Kern River Valley!!!
