Vol. 2 Issue 10: Old Union Cemetery!
Posted On 10/01/2008 10:30:59

I'm proud to announce that the new issue of the Legends and Lore of Illinois is here! This issue concerns Old Union Cemetery in DeWitt County. Old Union Cemetery has appeared previously in the work of Troy Taylor, but until now its complete history has yet to be told. Drawing from several different sources, the Legends and Lore of Illinois will give you the whole story behind this unique location!

This issue also contains a letter from a reader who attended St. Francis Boy's Camp in the early 1960s. St. Francis closed down and became Independence Grove, otherwise known as Devil's Gate! You won't want to miss it. Also, we finally reveal the winner of our fake ghost photograph contest, but you'll have to read the issue to find out who it is!

This issue is the first that we are offering in printed form. For more details, visit Old Union's unique page at the Legends and Lore of Illinois. To view or download the issue, click on the cover below, or simply go to www.blackoakmedia.org/legendsandlore.html

A Short History of Ashmore Estates!
Posted On 08/29/2008 17:04:55

A Digital Book in Portable Document Format (.pdf)

Ashmore Estates is of growing interest to the Illinois community and will appear (along with the author of this book) in several upcoming documentaries, in including "Children of the Grave 2" by the Booth Brothers.

For nearly twenty years, Ashmore Estates has loomed large in the minds of Coles County residents as well as students at Eastern Illinois University.  It has stood abandoned since 1987, every subsequent year falling prey to vandalism and neglect...

Ashmore Estates, as it has been known for the past forty-eight years, was once the Coles County Poor Farm, a place for indigent and elderly members of the community to live and work in relative stability.

That all changed in 1959, when the building, known as an almshouse, was sold to Ashmore Estates, Inc. and turned into a psychiatric hospital.  It has had many uses since then, but that is how generations of Coles County residents remember it.  “The abandoned insane asylum.”  What is its real story?

Volume 2 Issue 8: Peck Cemetery
Posted On 08/01/2008 11:07:57
Since the 1970s, Peck Cemetery has stood out as one of the most disturbed places in central Illinois. It was rumored to be the home of Satanic worshipers, as well as the dreaded "Devil's Chair." As so many of these places have, it has recently undergone a revitalization. Join the Legends and Lore of Illinois as we explore the mysteries behind this legendary location! The headless horseman of Illinois!
Posted On 07/01/2008 01:16:27
I'm proud to announce that the new issue of the Legends and Lore of Illinois is here!  This issue concerns Lakey's Creek. Lakey's Creek has the dubious honor of being home to Illinois' very own headless horseman; the ghost of Lakey himself!  Slain by an ax in the early 1800s (or so the story goes), Lakey's ghost has terrified travelers along this road for over a century.  Is there any truth to this legend?  Download the issue to find out!

Meanwhile, The Fallen have journeyed down to Southern Illinois to investigate the reports of a headless horseman.  With the trail of the astral portal gone cold, they are looking for new leads.  Perhaps the horseman himself will show them the way!

This issue contains a new feature: a book review!  In each new issue, I will review a book on ghosts or the paranormal that I think you will find interesting.  In this issue, I review Deborah Blum's Ghost Hunters.  To view or download the issue, click on the cover below, or simply go to www.blackoakmedia.org/legendsandlore.html

Volume 2 Issue 6: Calvary Cemetery
Posted On 06/01/2008 10:46:45

Calvary Cemetery is home to a most unusual ghost, "Seaweed Charlie"! Otherwise known as "The Aviator," this specter is said to crawl out of Lake Michigan covered in seaweed. Unlike most ghost tales, this story seems to be grounded in actual facts, but you can read more and decide for yourself. In their continuing adventures, The Fallen have devised a new means of finding the astral gate using old-fashion mirror gazing. But first, they must test it in the field. Will a group of unwelcome guests spoil their plans? Find out!

This issue contains a new feature: a book review! In each new issue, I am going to write a review of a book on ghosts or the paranormal that I think you will find interesting. In this issue, I review Raymond Moody's The Last Laugh.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (or whatever) is the oldest public university in the state of Illinois. As such, there are many ghost stories that have been associated with it over the years. The English Building, Psychology Building, even the YMCA have their share of stories. So what are you waiting for, dive right in and find out more!

The Fallen are taking a break from their quest to find the astral gate and have retreated to the ivory tower, where Mike and Aurelia hope to find a ghost while the rest of the group runs off to find spirits of a different kind.

This issue contains our last character profile of the year, plus a new and exciting game to alleviate your boredom! Also, you won't want to miss a letter from a former resident of Sunset Haven. He gives us an inside look at what went on in the building during its time as a facility for animal research. Just click on the cover below to go to our website and download the new issue.
